Okay, I must be living in a cave. When I went shopping to replace my old scanner that died, I learned the store didn’t carry scanners that just scan anymore. Oh, you can buy a combo scanner/fax/copier, but all I wanted was a scanner. That’s all. When I asked where I could buy just a scanner, the clerk was clueless.
Disappointed, I drove home, th

inking I needed a scanner to do my work. Then it hit me–digital cameras are replacing scanners. I did have a cheap digital camera, but rarely used it. It’s functional, but a pain to use. But, then again, you get what you pay for. And in my case, it was a gift for my husband’s 35 years of service at his company. As he’s not into digital photography, he’d practically given it to me. It’s a 2.1 Mega pixel, with 1600 x 1200 resolution images. To say that I know more than he does tells you just how little he knows about digital cameras. I didn’t know much, but I’m learning now that we’re on the threshold of investing in one.
My cheap camera (probably worth less than $100), is a 2.1 Mega pixel, with 1600 x 1200 resolution images. It doesn’t have much memory, although I can buy a memory card. But, even if I did, .the camera is still inferior because it’s hard to delete old pictures. When pushing the “trash” icon, it asks you, “do you really want to delete this?” After about ten times of chasing the button back and forth, trying to push “yes”, it finally deletes a picture. But first it plays tag with the “no” button, which is very annoying.
But annoying or not, I’ve been using it every other day now for the past month. I said every other day, because it’s being recharged on the “other” days. Yep, it doesn’t take much to wear out the batteries, and I don’t use simple drug store batteries. I use rechargeable ones that are pricier than just regular batteries. I “put them to bed” in their charger cradle which I plug into an electrical outlet for about 24 hours. This alone has convinced me to invest in a better camera.
Besides using it for my freelance job, it will also get a good workout when I go to the Holy Lands next summer. By then, I should be a pro at taking digital pictures, right?
So far, this is what I’m learning about finding a good digital camera which still isn’t that expensive……
*First, set a budget of how much you want to spend. Digital cameras vary in price, depending on how you plan to use it. I actually saw some digital cameras today in a department store for as little as $49. I didn’t check them out, because a camera that cheap is probably even lower memory than my cheapo $100 one. However, I do know that digital cameras have improved much, are much sharper and more affordable than they used to be. If you’re interested in the camera’s cosmetics, you’ll pay more. They come in assorted colors, but to me, that’s immaterial. But if you care more about function, then you can save some money.
*The cost of memory cards has dropped by half compared since last year. One-gigabyte memory cards now only cost about $30, and $50 two-gigabyte cards are even more popular.
*Computer later than Windows 98, have a plug and play function. Just plug your camera into your computer, go to (in my case) Drive “E” to select “camera” to get your pictures. For older models Windows 98 and lower, you’ll need to install the disk.. (I’m sure most of you already knew this, but we only had a Windows 98 version when we first got our camera.)
*How many megapixels do you need? That depends on how you plan to use the picture you take. If you intend to print or retouch your pictures, you should stick to a a 4-megapixel resolution and higher. This will work fine for web and email, as well as resolutions below that. However, if you want to make prints 8×10 or larger, you’ll need digicams with 5 megapixel resolution or higher.
*What about batteries? Again, that depends where you take your pictures. For example, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries last longer. But if you’re taking pictures outdoors where you’re unable to recharge your batteries, then you probably should use a disposable ones. I use rechargeable ones for my little camera as my pictures aren’t shot out in the wilderness. Again, it’s just a pain to constantly have to recharge them.
*If you want to do more than just take pictures, there are cameras (for more money, of course) with more bells and whistles. They can do everything from take videos, record voices, to play back music. Of course, it’s up to you to decide just how much you want your camera to do.
*Lenses-This depends on the focal length. Will you be taking long distance pictures of football games or up-close ones of flowers and portraits? For close-up shots you’ll need regular lenses (about 35 mm). But if you plant to use it more for outdoor shots, then you should choose tele-zoom lenses which have a wider angel. There are varieties of lenses, depending on brand and price range. This just gives you a basic idea.
As you can see, choosing a camera depends on many factors. It all depends on how you plan to use it and how much you wish to invest.
